Student Volunteers

  • Each semester HealthReach receives dozens of requests from interested students about volunteering. In order to provide students with meaningful and valuable learning experiences, we have begun to provide fewer yet more intensive opportunities for students.

HealthReach offers two programs for students: (I) Public Health Internships and (II) Preceptorships for students in need of clinical credit hours for their health care programs (e.g., medical assistants, nurses, advanced care practitioners, etc.). All programs are voluntary (unpaid).

I. Public Health Internship

HealthReach offers both summer and school-year internships. Public Health Internships will expose the selected students to a variety of tasks related to free medical clinic operations. Interns must commit to an agreed-upon schedule, be able to manage multiple competing demands, display a high level of organizational skills, and maintain the strictest confidentiality.

Medical appointments are provided for our patients on Monday – Thursday each week. Interns work primarily during clinic hours to increase opportunities for directly interacting with patients, although some hours on Friday are permissible.

Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Attributes:

  • Self-starter
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Responsiveness & Adaptability
  • Interest in working with low-income or otherwise vulnerable individuals and families
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Team player
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Ability to learn and utilize an electronic medical records system
  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) a plus
  • Must have a passion for the mission of HealthReach

A. Summer Internship

Each summer, HealthReach will select students to serve May-August (please ask your college advisor about obtaining course credit for hours served). Interns are selected in April for each upcoming summer and must commit to volunteering 1-2 days each week for a minimum block of 3.5 hours each day (9a-12:30p, 12:30-4p, or 4-7:30p (Tuesdays only). Responsibilities may vary depending on students’ interests and clinic needs. The summer internship usually entails participation in community outreach events, data entry, and analysis, shadowing opportunities with various health care professionals, greeting patients, tracking and reporting health indicators, small-scale research projects, developing educational materials for patients, and more. Students must have career aspirations in health care and be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited academic institution, or currently in the process of applying to post-grad medical programs. Applications are accepted April 1-15; students are selected & notified no later than April 30.

B. School-Year Internship

Undergraduate students will be selected each August to serve throughout the upcoming school year (September – April; please ask your college advisor about obtaining course credit for hours served). Students must commit to volunteering 1-2 days each week for a minimum block of 3.5 hours each day (9a-12:30p, 12:30-4p, or 4-7:30p (Tuesdays only).

In order to encourage long-term commitment, a student who serves as an intern for one year will receive the highest priority when selecting interns in subsequent years (interns who serve several consecutive years with HealthReach have the potential to grow with our clinic and accept increasing responsibility over time). Responsibilities may vary depending on students’ interests and clinic needs but usually entail the following: data entry and analysis, developing health education materials, maintaining and organizing supplies, shadowing physicians and other health care professionals, maintaining and tracking health indicator data, assisting front desk volunteers when needed, ensuring safe disposal of outdated medications and supplies, chart archival, participation in community outreach events, and providing research assistance to the Executive Director. Students must have career aspirations in health care and be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited academic institution, or currently in the process of applying to post-grad medical programs.  Applications are accepted August 1-15; students are selected & notified no later than August 30.

To apply for either the Summer or School-Year Public Health Internship, please email (1) a brief letter of interest describing why you should be selected as an intern , (2) your resume, (3) your proposed start and end dates, and (4) your Monday-Thursday availability to Angela McMillan (AngelaM@healthreachclinic.org) following the deadlines listed above. Due to space constraints, please note that no more than 1 student can volunteer at our clinic at the same time. We will do our best to accommodate students’ schedules, but internship opportunities may be limited due to space constraints.

II. Preceptorships

No preceptorships for advanced-care practitioners will be considered or offered until further notice. Please revisit our website in the future for more information. Please note that only one student will be allowed a preceptorship at HealthReach during any given semester.

Students requiring clinical hours for medical assistant, nursing or other health services programs should contact Angela McMillan (AngelaM@healthreachclinic.org) to inquire about availability.
